sbo666 Barcelona were far from their best but managed to secure a 4-1 first-leg victory at the Nou Camp to take full control of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Roma.

Ernesto Valverde's side struggled for rhythm for much of the game against the Italian side, but built a three-goal advantage thanks to own goals either side of half-time from Daniele De Rossi (40) and Kostas Manolas (55) and a tap in from Gerard Pique (59).

Edin Dzeko gave Roma a late glimmer of hope heading into next week's second leg at the Stadio Olimpico by scoring an away goal, but Luis Suarez (87) landed a late blow as Barca put one foot in the last four.

Barcelona enjoyed a 6-1 win over Roma in their last Champions League meeting in November 2015 and they might have thought they were on their way to another comprehensive win when Suarez had the ball in the back of the net in only the seventh minute, but the strike was correctly ruled out for offside.

It was the tale of the two former Premier League strikers in the early stages as, minutes later, Dzeko tumbled in the Barca box under a challenge from Nelson Semedo, but Dutch referee Danny Makkelie waved away the appeals. sbo666

The chances continued to fall for the hosts as Ivan Rakitic's strike rebounded off the post before Alisson diverted Suarez's goalbound strike beyond the far post.

However, they eventually took the lead just before the break and the goal came in fortunate circumstances. De Rossi slid in ahead Lionel Messi - who would have been in on goal - with an excellent challenge just inside the penalty area but unfortunately for the Italian, the ball ended up beating Alisson and nestling in the bottom corner.

After the break, Roma missed a glorious chance to pull one back when Diego Perotti headed wide from close range and they were punished when Pique tapped home the rebound from close range after Alisson palmed away Suarez's shot.

Barcelona needed Marc-Andre ter Stegen to make superb saves to deny Gregoire Defrel and Perotti, but the visitors eventually got their away goal 10 minutes from time.

Perotti's pass picked out Dzeko on the penalty spot and the former Manchester City striker used his strength to hold off Jordi Alba before steering the ball into the bottom corner. sbo666

Rangers caretaker Jimmy Nicholl criticises referee over Aberdeen penalty

sbothai8 Jimmy Nicholl criticised referee Steven McLean for the penalty decision that almost wrecked Rangers' bid for second spot in the Scottish Premiership. The official handed Aberdeen a 14th-minute spot-kick after his Pittodrie namesake Kenny McLean tumbled under pressure from Alfredo Morelos - but replays appeared to show the Colombian frontman got a touch to the ball. The Dons midfielder tucked home his penalty but Ross McCrorie rescued a 1-1 draw and a vital point for the Ibrox team to send the three-team battle for the runners-up slot to the final day of the season.

Caretaker boss Nicholl was furious with referee McLean for putting his side's chances at risk, saying: "We can't afford (the referee's decision). If it hadn't happened we would've continued doing what we had been doing during the first 15 minutes you would like to think. "Whatever threat they had we were dealing with as best we could. "It wasn't a penalty and it's disappointing the referee gave it, especially if there's a doubt. If there's no doubt I'd be standing there saying: 'What are you doing, Alfredo? For goodness sake! You've cost us the game!'

"I'd understand if it was a blatant, stupid thing to do in the box. But it wasn't obvious. It isn't August with three games gone. It is the end of the season with two games to go and those were three points I thought we deserved and never got." Gers remain a point behind Derek McInnes' men but Hibernian can draw level with the Light Blues if they beat Hearts on Wednesday night, meaning it will be all to play for when the Reds go to Celtic Park and the Ibrox side to Easter Road on Sunday's final day of the season. As well as being unhappy with referee McLean, Nicholl was frustrated his men allowed themselves to be affected by the referee's call. sbothai8

"They had to get on with it, but they didn't," he said. "They got frustrated with the decision and lost their way. That was the annoying thing. We had to get them in at half-time and get the football head back on again. "If you get frustrated with refereeing decisions, you lose concentration and you don't do your jobs properly. They did that and it was a great second 45 minutes.  "It was a good goal from Ross McCrorie, a determined young player who went with conviction." sbothai8
